Sunday Comics is a weekly feature where I spotlight awesome comics that you may want to check out.

The Comic: Blankets

By:
Craig Thompson

Type: Graphic Novel

Content Rating: R, for language, occasional nudity, a scene of implied child molestation, and a scene of masturbation.

Plot:A heartbreaking and honest-feeling take on the author's account of his childhood, first love, and subsequent journey to adulthood while growing up in Wisconsin and the thick of the 90s Grunge wave under his Fundamentalist Christian parents and church community.

Personal thoughts: I haven't done any nonfiction comics on this site yet, so here we are. Names were changed, but Mr. Thompson claims the rest is based in real life thoughts, experiences, and events, and it certainly seems that painfully real. I rather like the art style he's chosen too--everything is done with loose, feathered brushwork, drawn with a more cartoony and expressionistic style that uses exaggeration quite well and gives additional life to the loose, sketchy lines. A lot of this must have been really hard for Thompson to write...it's definitely a very bittersweet tale. Bring some tissues. The time period that it's set in is also awesomely preserved, mainly, I think, due to details like clothing and hair--the whole atmosphere certainly feels very 90s. I don't know, really, what much else to say about it. I think given the right directorial skills, it might make for a good film, too, probably animated to preserve the style.

Holden Out.
